Sasquatch! Festival 2010- Headlinerlesstastic

Looking at the Sasquatch! Festival lineup this year is kinda like  sucking on a sour soother for me: a part of me is tasting the rainbow, and another part of me is doing the cobra yawn and gleeking all over the place.

Let’s be real here, Sasquatch! has nothing to prove; it is one of the sexiest festivals around (perhaps THE sexiest, in my opinion), and is consequently the wet dream of respectable indie kids, hipsters, scenesters,  and trendy liberal music junkies alike.  Truth is, Sasquatch! is for anyone who likes groovy beats, ’cause the sky is the limit if you’re there to have a no-holds-barred good time.  Better yet, if you like dunes, the Gorge Amphitheatre-situated on the Columbia River in Washington State-is quite possibly the highest quality in dunes, and truly a sight to behold… even after a couple cases of choice lager consumed at ridiculously balmy temperatures.

But, if heat stroke isn’t your thing, there is always the music, and though I hate to complain, the lineup is a little lack-lustre in just FEW areas:

Most specifically, HEADLINERS:  Pavement, Massive Attack, and My Morning Jacket.
Part of what makes Sasquatch! as gnar as it is is the fact that it applies to multiple genres… but I still have to shudder uncomfortably when I see Pavement headlining.
In fact, with the exception of Massive Attack, I honestly don’t see any of these acts as ‘Headliner’ material… especially when paired against the somewhat daunting Coachella and Bonnaroo lineups, which are pretty much enough to dampen even the most respectable gentleman’s rag.

The truth is though, there needs to be a little Pavement in everyone’s Festival of choice, and even heavy hitters like Coachella and Roskilde have included them in their lineups.

So, if you’re like me, and seeing Pavement is the equivalent of getting peppermint castile soap in your naughty place when you’re just trying to get clean, do not fear because Sasquatch! still has enough jam to please: LCD Soundsystem, Deadmau5, Vampire Weekend, Miike Snow, Boyz Noize, Kid Cudi, Booka Shade, Band of Horses, The National, Public Enemy, Passion Pit,  Neon Indian, She & Him (Zoey Deschanel!!), The Mountain Goats, Caribou, Broken Social Scene, Drive-By Truckers, and it goes on…

So, do yourselves a favor, get snappy and buy your tickets on the super-fly before they get expensive!  And look for me, I’ll be the one holding the Ultimate Party Force Banner trying to find my way around a disco ball.

Over and out.

Sled Island Lineup-Woot Woot!!

Posted in Music, Music Festivals with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on March 26, 2008 by attemptedmustache

Calgary’s Sled Island Festival released it’s 2008 lineup yesterday, and things are looking up for all the cow-folk in cowtown.

Although the full lineup has yet to be completely unveiled (May 1st), this is a pretty good start!
Artists attending thus far include:

RZA (Bobby Digital), Mogwai, Of Montreal, Wire, Drive-by Truckers, Jose Gonzales, Extra Golden, Gutter Twins, Beans, Jonathan Richman, The Dodos, Pride Tiger, Wet Secrets, Carolyn Mark, Elliot Brood, Deerhunter, Headlights, Miss Muragatroid & Petra Haden, Portastatic, Scott Kannenberg (former ‘Pavement’ gutarist/ Guest Festival Curator/ Founder of ‘Preston School of Industry/ Spiral Stairs/ Childhood friend of Stephan Malkmus, could he be booked?), Whitsundays, Luther Wright, Woodpidgeon, Mother Mother, Modern Man, Broken West, No Age, American Music Club, Elizabeth, Women, The CaveSingers.

Possible Rumors Include:

Stephan Malkmus and the Jicks, Peaches, Broken Social Scene, Feist, Corb Lund,Black Mountain, She and Him, The Kills

Sled Island will take place June 25-28th at the Shaw Millenium Park (Calgary, AB). And I have a sneaking suspicion that it is going to totally blow the up-and-coming Virgin Music Fest out of the water! Here’s hoping!! I’d rather attend a Festival that showcases local talent before another that is supported by giant corporations, and headed by some billionaire asshole who consistently forgets to shave. But…for the record… I’ll probably go to both.

June is pretty much slotted to be the best month of the year, if you’re living in Calgary!

Outside Lands… huh?!!

Kay… this festival came out of nowhere… at least to me anyway; I’ve never even heard of it before. Maybe that implies that I’ve been living in a cave for the last little while…. and I’m willing to admit that definitely a version of that statement applies: just replace ‘cave’ with ‘wind-coulee’, and ‘living’ with ‘trapped against my own will’, and THEN we’ve definitely got a bit more of an accurate statement going on.

San Francisco’s Outside Lands Festival released details of their lineup via the San Francisco Chronicle… and whoa!

Beck… Radiohead… Wilco… Manu Chao…

What the heck?!

According to the San Francisco Chronicle:

More than 60 bands and performers – including Beck, Primus and Widespread Panic – have been signed for the Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival on five stages over three days, Aug. 22-24, in Golden Gate Park, producers announced Monday.

In addition to the already advertised headliners – Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Radiohead and Jack Johnson – the colossal program will also feature Wilco, Manu Chao, Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals, and Steve Winwood.

Also appearing will be Rodrigo y Gabriela, Café Tacvba, Broken Social Scene, Regina Spektor, Devendra Banhart, Galactic’s Crescent City Soul Krewe, Steel Pulse, Cold War Kids, Andrew Bird, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Drive-By Truckers, M. Ward, ALO (Animal Liberation Orchestra), Matt Nathanson, Two Gallants and Mother Hips.

More artists are expected to be added to the lineup, so keep your eye on the prize and check this site every day: SFOutsideLands

Tickets go on sale: March 30th-10am Pacific

Maybe it was just the name of the festival that initially made me think the roster ought to be comprised of hillbilly bands from the U.S. interior… but this just knocked my socks off, and I HAVEN’T even had my coffee yet, DAMMITT!!
Though… I wouldn’t be opposed if one hillbilly band showed up and played some songs on the banjo.. that’s just plain romantic. hah.   Everyone loves a good banjo.

Over and out.

Rothbury Festival Comes out of Nowhere!

Ever since the release of the Coachella 2008 lineup, I’ve been reeling and writhing in agony just waiting for a better festival to present itself. Then out of no where the Rothbury Festival arrives… and… furthers my fall into a sad sad musical depression.

rothbury-3.jpg

The Coachella forum has been rumoring this mystery festival for a little while now, and it seems like there are plenty of people out there just like me just waiting with baited breath for something better to come our way. I’m glad to see I’m not the only opportunist. And whats that shit they say about how idealists never succeed?! I won’t believe it!!

Either way, it doesn’t look like this is going to be THE festival I’ve been hoping for though… but the lineup is pretty decent, just not quite enough for me to take the bait. Seems that the longer I wait the more my hopes on Lollapalooza, Sasquatch and the All Points West Festival seem to grow.

As per the Rothbury Festival: (To be held in Rothbury, Michigan between July 3-6)

Here are some of the highlights:

Dave Matthews Band + Widespread Panic + John Mayer + 311 + Phil Lesh and Friends + Primus + Thievery Corporation + Snoop Dogg + Modest Mouse + Michael Franti and Spearhead + Gov’t Mule + Slightly Stoopid + STS9 + Colbie Caillat + The Black Keys + Yonder Mountain String Band with Jon Fishman + Gogol Bordello + Citizen Cope + Keller Williams and The WMD’S + The Disco Biscuits+ Medeski Martin & Wood + Ray LaMontagne + Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi Soul Stew Revival + Drive-By Truckers + Of Montreal + The Dresden Dolls + Gomez + Brett Dennen + Taj Mahal + Mike Gordon + Zappa Plays Zappa
