Oh Pemberton, Where Art Thou?

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on March 1, 2010 by attemptedmustache

It’s been a couple long years since the Pemberton Festival graced the grounds of the damp British Columbian valley near Whistler, and for everyone that was lucky enough to survive the weekend, we’ve been itching like hounds to get back to that remarkably dusty potato field.

So, what is the 411 as to why this Festival has been missing in action? Was it the farmer? Land permits? Honey Buckets? Was it the disorganization and cost? Live Nation? Tom Cruise? Science? Ecoli Poisoning?

Well, 40,000+ fans are still waiting for some indication as to whether Pemberton will be returning, and I’m sure local officials and Live Nation are sick of hearing about it.

However, just like indigestion after a spicy burrito, things seem to be stirring.  The Forum is under construction, and the Festival site has seen a facelift or two as well in the last few months.  Perhaps this all could be an indication that something is in the works for 2011…. or nothing.

Too soon to shed tears of hope?  Perhaps, but according to Consequence of Sound:

“local officials are continuing their discussions to facilitate a return of Pemberton, seeking to address outstanding items and questions that have apparently been raised by the festival’s producers, Live Nation. In addition to the question of preserving the agricultural capability of the lands, the two sides have been dealing with issues surrounding liquor sales, policing costs, conditions from CN Rail, and some local businesses wanting buyouts over the course of events.”

While Live Nation made the following Statement:

“For the time being, we have put plans to stage the next Pemberton Festival on hold while we work with local officials on issues which will make the festival financially feasible for us. We hope that we will be able to bring back the Festival to Pemberton at some point in the future,”

“Some point in the future” hey? Doesn’t really make me feel like getting on the black market right away and selling my left kidney for a ticket. Live Nation might be beating around a mighty bush at the moment, but I’m certain they’ll come through in the end, potentially after some political hoop jumping.

The question really remains, when we FINALLY see the return of Pemberton, is it going to be the same Festival that brought us the likes of Jay-Z, Coldplay, Dj Shadow, MSTRKRFT, Tom Petty, NIN, Deadmau5, Chromeo, MGMT, The Flaming Lips, Death Cab, and more… ?????
Well, if the 2010 Winter Olympics did for Vancouver and the surrounding area what that dark, greenish sex tape did for Paris Hilton, then I’m pretty sure we’ll see the big groups making like a rolling stone to get their piece of the infamous pie.  I guess I’ll just have to go bowl for strikes in some unkept porta-potties until that time… oh the memories.

Bonnaroo Festival Announces More Acts…again!

Posted in Music, Music Festivals with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on March 19, 2008 by attemptedmustache

I’m starting to see an emerging pattern here… and it seems like every festival is jumping on the bandwagon. Nonetheless, it IS that time of the year, and all these Festivals ought to be sprucing up their lineups to bring in the peeps… and the $$$.
One thing is for sure, they aren’t making it easy on those last minute opportunists who are trying to weed the weaker festivals and settle on a winner.

Bonnaroo announced their lineup’s latest round of additions:

Tiesto, Stephen Marley, Newton Faulkner, Money Mark, Rogue Wave, The Wood Brothers, and The Coup.

For those that haven’t been keeping up to date, the previous round included:

Cat Power, Zappa Plays Zappa, The Disco Biscuits, MSTRKRFT, Chromeo

Yeah… Pemberton sounds like some small English town that might house a Castle made entirely out of Mentos.. but, it sure ain’t.. it’s a little redneck town just outside of Whistler, British Columbia and it plans to be the future site of a very very cool Canadian Music Festival.

So if you’re like me, you’ve likely gotten far too accustomed to migrating 1000s of miles across the continent to catch acts you’d never see in Alberta, Canada. So… let Pemberton cut down your travel time by a couple days (though that might cut the fun in half too–if you’re a lover of the road trip).

The 2008 Pemberton Music Festival includes these amazing acts:

Coldplay, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Nine Inch Nails, Jay-Z, Flaming Lips, Interpol, Death Cab For Cutie, The Tragically Hip, Serj Tankian, My Morning Jacket, Metric, Sam Roberts Band, Vampire Weekend, Black Mountain, Minus The Bear, Wintersleep, Buck 65, Secret Machines, MGMT, Brazillian Girls, SIA, Fiery Furnaces, Mates of State, The Airborne Toxic Event, Carolina Liar, Grand Ole Party, Monte Negro, Low Vs Diamond, Annie Stela, The Crystal Method, DJ Shadow & Cut Chemist, Junkie XL, David Seaman, Booka Shade, MSTRKRFT, M.A.N.D.Y., Tommie Sunshine, Chromeo, Deadmau5, 3 OH! 3, Kevin Shiu, Timeline, Tony Pantages

The Festival is set for July 25-27 in Pemberton, B.C

Tickets go on sale Friday March 28th and can be found HERE!

And talk about the perfect place to have a concert, this place looks like a magical fairy land!!

I can finally breathe a huge sigh of relief today, the All Points West Festival Lineup has been announced… and, it looks pretty damn good.

APW is to be hosted by Goldenvoice/AEG Live and Liberty Events. And get this, it’s gonna be a GREEN event too!! All the better! This includes carpooling, ample transportation to and from the site as well as all day Ferry service. Sounds damn classy, I’m telling you!
And, coming all the way from Canada, it’s ALWAYS in ones best interest to carpool; the gas costs will screw you every time!

Tickets for this three-day, multi-stage festival go on sale Feb 29th through Ticketmaster.
The ALL POINTS WEST MUSIC & ARTS FESTIVAL LINE-UP (as of 2/21) is as follows: Radiohead, Jack Johnson, Underworld, Kings of Leon, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Cat Power, The Roots, The New Pornographers, Youssou N’Dour, Animal Collective, Andrew Bird, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Metric, CSS, Girl Talk, Chromeo, The Go! Team, Amadou & Mariam, The Black Angels, Sia, The Felice Brothers, K’Naan, Jason Isbell, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Alberta Cross, The Virgins, Black Kids, Mates of State, Duffy, Forro in the Dark, Nicole Atkins, Juana Molina, Little Brother, Rogue Wave, Neil Halstead and Your Vegas.

There are 40 acts scheduled in total, so the above list is just a sneak-peak. Not to mention, Radiohead is headlining both Friday and Saturday night! Thats the money’s worth right there!!

Coachella 2008: off the viagra

Posted in Music with tags , , , , , , , , , , on January 22, 2008 by attemptedmustache

oh how the Coachella Music Festival sux donkey balls this year, let me count the ways.

Well, way-to-go Festival Planners, you may have just committed a mass suicide with this little roll-down of the shittiest Coachella Line-up I’ve seen in years. If you look real close, yep… DEEEEP into the fine print you might be able to spot more than a few bands that qualify in the awesome category, but Jack Johnson? The Verve? Portishead? I feel like I just jumped into a time machine and traveled 7 years into the past. Maybe my expectations were too high, and maybe the pinch on my wallet was a little too tight this year, but the only highlights I can spot in the wreck are Hot Chip, The Bees, Sia, Chromeo…

O-kay, I could go on, there ARE plenty of solid bands in there, but I was REALLY hoping for a Radiohead/RHCP-type MEGA group to headline each night… I mean, they ALWAYS produce, but for some reason, this line-up has left me wanting for MORE.

New Jersey… here I come??

Until further notice… my ever-ready Coachella hard-on has officially gone limp.
