Attack of the Biblots!

If you thought that the only place you could run into a brainwashed Fundamentalist Christian was on a random street corner, ‘Jesus Camp’, or a hillbilly trailer park in the Southern United States, think again… cuz they might just be picketing your son’s funeral.

Generally speaking, I’m very open to individuals believing what they want to believe, and I especially try to omit judgment when it comes to views on things like sexual preference, religion, politics, etc. Live and let live, or so they say.

However, there are certain times when I definitely have to draw the line in the sand. Lately it seems that extreme Fundamentalist Christians are the ones on the other side of that line, and surprise surprise, they’re always trying to make EVERYONE join them…THIS is the part I have the biggest problem with.

I hate to make overarching generalizations, but it seems to me that for the average religious fundamentalist, critical thinking is likely more foreign to them than a reading in Arabic. Maybe it’s the indoctrinating, brainwashed nature of their upbringing, or perhaps the overall acceptance of their faith that generally lies in a grid-locked belief in the literal, verbatim interpretation of their scripture; in this case, The Bible.

I’m not really sure, but I do believe that to the majority of the secular world, the rationale that extreme fundamentalists employ to justify their beliefs may often appear to border on some level of profound insanity, not to mention, it can seem overwhelmingly hypocritical and childish (especially when they send their children out into the streets with pamphlets for would-be converts).

If you’re totally in the dark and wondering what kinds of saints I’m referring to here, I’ll offer you a prime example: The Wesboro Baptist Church.
Marching under the slogan “God Hates Fags”, these geniuses have the audacity to refer to themselves as ‘Christians’ as they parade around protesting the funerals of soldiers, homosexuals and more recently, screen actor Heath Ledger, whom they claim ought to be eternally damned for his portrayal of a homosexual man in the wellknown film “Brokeback Mountain“.

First of all, using the guise of religion to promote your ‘holier than thou’ views about homosexuality is agenda promoting and about as valid as other Fundamentalist beliefs that the earth is only 6,000 years old, or that women are filthy and wasteful because they menstruate.
Second of all, if there IS a God, and if God created man in his image, I’m sure the last thing he would have hoped for humankind is that they spend the entirety of their lives sitting in judgment of others.
Thirdly, is it just me, or do these people persist until all elements of ‘choice’ are completely eliminated from daily life? I wouldn’t doubt it…

So, if you feel like being filled with rage, please enjoy these interviews with Shirley Phelps-Roper, a prominent member of the Westboro Baptist Church as she discusses the reasons why she believes that Heath Ledger is burning in hell, why his death was an act of God, why she feels justified in harassing his friends and loved ones at his memorial service, and how his death is the ultimate justice for his crimes as a ‘proud pervert’.
She’s a REALLY lovely lady…

And to lighten the mood, here are some quotes I really appreciated in the message board:

“The Westboro Baptist Church should try singing from a different hymn sheet. How about Lennon and McCartney:

All you need is love
All you need is love
All you need is love
Love is all you need “

“Repent and Santa Claus will not accept you into tooth fairy land”

  1. There is a good docu about the church (which is basically just a family with a few converts) called “The Most Hated Family in America”, worth checking out especially since it is British.
